UPDATE: Gov't Sanctioned Homeless Encampment in Athens, GA Closing

We reported back in September 2021 that the well-known Athen's homeless campsite "Cooterville" was issued a Notice to Vacate from its landowners. The county commissioner's office approved a county government-sanctioned homeless encampment in another location.

First Step, was created and officially opened its gates on March 16, 2022, with the intention of providing a safer and more structured environment for those who had been living in tents at Cooterville. Many residents of Cooterville were moved to First Step during this transition.

The aim of First Step was not only to provide shelter but also to assist residents in finding permanent housing solutions while offering basic amenities and support services. After nearly 2 years, First Step is closing its gates. It's being reported that local government officials chose not to renew its contract due to leadership failures and financial mismanagement.
