In Athens, GA county commissioners have voted to create a government-sanctioned homeless encampment behind a former high school. This comes after the known campsite "Cooterville" was issued a Notice to Vacate by land owners. Homeless residents must exit the property by November 12, 2021.
County officials will spend $250,000 to secure the abandoned buildings and get the plot of land ready with running water, electricity, and a safe place to store personal belongings. According to the county’s plan, the campsite will be able to accommodate as many as 50 people. Current homeless residents of Cooterville are concerned that opening up the campsite to so many will attract disorder to their community.
