Hidden Homelessness: Understanding & Addressing the Issue

• • Invisibility: The nature of hidden homelessness means it is frequently overlooked by policymakers and the public.
  • Lack of Data: Inadequate data collection leads to an underestimation of the issue, complicating efforts to address it effectively.
  • Resource Allocation: Without accurate data, resources may not be directed where it is most needed.

Direct Support Services 

To address this issue we have implemented the following:

• Emergency financial assistance for motel stays. 
• School supply donations to motels.
• Monthly deliveries of hygiene products and clothes to shelters.
• On-site financial workshops at transitional living centers.
• "Credit Building Bootcamp" workshops
  
• Counseling services

How Can You Help? Advocate for Policy Changes

• We support legislative efforts like the Homeless Children and Youth Act (H.R. 5221), which aims to align HUD’s definition of homelessness with other federal agencies. This would ensure that individuals experiencing hidden homelessness are eligible for federal assistance programs. The bill remains unpassed as of now, having been introduced in the House on August 15, 2023.
• Engage with and support advocacy groups that push for broader recognition of hidden homelessness at local, state, and federal levels.
• Advocate for affordable housing initiatives that prioritize families in transitional living situations by: 
  
  • Sending letters or emails to local representatives urging them to fund affordable housing projects.
  • Supporting legislation that increases funding for transitional living programs or expands affordable housing.
  • Participate in public meetings or town halls related to zoning laws or budget allocations for low-income housing.
