Atlanta City Council approved a resolution (25-R-3082) imposing a 45-day moratorium on the use of heavy equipment during encampment clearings. This decision was made following the tragic death of Cornelius Taylor, who was crushed in his tent by city machinery during an encampment sweep. The resolution also requires Partners for HOME to present a detailed report within 45 days outlining procedures and precautions necessary to ensure safety during such operations.
The resolution passed to establish a City of Atlanta Homelessness Task Force. The task force will review existing policies and procedures related to homelessness and determine whether they adequately address the needs of unhoused individuals while balancing public safety concerns. The task force will meet publicly every two weeks and is required to submit an initial report within 45 days and a final report within 90 days.
The task force includes representatives from various organizations such as:
- Partners for HOME
- Gateway Center
- Hope Atlanta
- Housing Justice League
- Atlanta Police Department and Department of Public Works
- Salvation Army
- Mercy Care
We will keep you updated on the task force reports.
