Homeless Courts are specialized court sessions that operate outside of traditional courtrooms, often at local homeless service agencies. They provide a voluntary pathway for individuals experiencing homelessness to resolve criminal cases, particularly those related to low-level offenses and outstanding warrants, which can hinder a person's ability to secure housing, employment, or identification. It is important to note that Homeless Court does not handle serious offenses, such as violent crimes, sexual offenses, or drug distribution charges.
This initiative was held at Union Mission’s Day Center in downtown Savannah. Attendees had the opportunity to meet directly with court officials, including judges, prosecutors, public defenders, and clerks representing multiple courts. They could reschedule missed court dates, discuss active cases, and receive assistance navigating the legal system.
Beyond the legal services, the pop-up event also provided immediate support services, including a mobile shower and a soup kitchen. The success of this event led the District Attorney’s Office to express hope for hosting more in the future.
